To get an idea of this book, think Pirates of the Caribbean meets Pride and Prejudice with a dash of magic and myth thrown in for good measure- and that is this book. I received this book from the publisher and I’m actually surprised how much I enjoy it. I love fantasy but I wasn’t sure about the mix- but it works! Each of the crew members were far more than background characters, each had their own stories which made them and the story of The Wilted Rose fascinating.

Lennie, the protagonist, has been through a lot, like most YA heroines, and sometimes she lets it get to her. However, her troubles create a balance when Nathaniel Davenport-Lee joins the crew and she is both conflicted, but intrigued. Nathaniel’s entrance enabled her to move on from them, bury them deep, and replace them with new memories. Better memories. Ones she deserves.

As much as I love a bit of bloodshed, sword fights and cursed pirates, I was actually quite glad of the love story. It didn’t ruin the story and it also showed just how dangerous the curse was. Nathaniel and Lennie cannot profess their love for one another without causing the other one, to suffer the consequences, in death. The harder they fell for each other, the harder it got not to say it. I wanted them to be happy.

But of course, happiness, for Lennie especially, won’t last forever. Her heartbreak was painful and even though her behaviour and moods made her annoying in places, I genuinely felt sorry for her.

I have to admit though, her and Nathaniel’s relationship reminded me of Will and Elizabeth from POTC- another relationship where the male party is doomed. 😦

Rosa, the enchanted figurehead of The Wilted Rose was probably one of my favourite characters with her wisdom it was just a shame that her rival was so incredibly petty.

Inherited is a great opener for the Curses of VIII series. Freedom is a great writer for one so young especially when it comes to writing in the YA format. I didn’t find it hard to follow- the first person narrative made it much better to see things from Lennie ‘ s point of view.

Really enjoyed this book! Pick it up on release day and you won’t be disappointed.

4/5 stars.

Thanks for reading! ~ Katie
